Iowa City West's Hunter Garvin is back in the finals for the second straight season after pinning Southeast Polk's Carter Martinson in 3:43 at 138 pounds. Garvin, who is 15-0 on the season, went 33-3 last season on his way to the 132 pound state title.

7:55 p.m.: Down goes a state champ

Dubuque Hempstead's Chad Bellis beat Waverly-Shell Rock's Bailey Roybal 9-4 to advance to the 120 pound finals. Roybal had lost just two times this season. He'd also fallen to Bellis the previous week. Roybal was last season's champion at 113 pounds.

7:52 p.m.: Ankeny's Anderson returns to the finals

Ankeny's Trever Anderson is back in the finals after beating Johnson's Rheiner Stallbaum with a 4-0 decision at 120 pounds. It's a return back for Anderson who was the 106 pound champion in 2019. He finished third at 113 pounds last season. What a start for the CIML which secured spots in two of the first three weight class finals.

7:46 p.m.: Waukee freshman moves on to the finals

Waukee freshman Carter Freeman continued the strong start to his high school career. Freeman beat Fort Dodge's Dru Ayala in a close 6-4 decision at 106 pounds. Freeman got a takedown late in the third period to secure the win and improve to 27-0 on the season.

We're approaching the end of the second day of the state tournament. Class 3A semifinals and third round consolations are about to get going in about 20 minutes. Class 2A semifinals and third round consolations will go after that. It's still a tight team race in Class 3A with Waukee clinging to 78 points. Not far behind is Waverly-Shell Rock with 75.5 points.

5:52 p.m.: Updating the Class 2A team race

4:31 p.m.: Fourth time is a charm?

Logan-Magnolia's Briar Reisz is back in the finals for the fourth time in his career. The senior may finally capture the elusive state title that he's missed out on the last three seasons. Standing in his way: Columbus Catholic freshman Maximus Magayna who is 41-0 this season.

4:21 p.m.: The three-timers club could be growing

Just 94 wrestlers in state history have won three state titles. Bu that number could grow in a big way Saturday. Aidan Noonan (132) and Robert Avila (145) advanced to Saturday's finals. Noonan is a senior. Avila, just a junior, could also put himself in the conversation for four state tiles.

4:16 p.m.: Robert Avila marches toward history

Lisbon junior Robert Avila will get a shot at his third state title. Avila advanced to Saturday's finals with a tech fall victory over Mount Ayr's Trae Ehlen at 145 pounds. The loss was just the third of the season for Ehlen. Avila, meanwhile, improved to 33-0 on the season. Three and eventually four state titles could be in the mix for him.

4:13 p.m.: Gable Porter survives and advances

It has bene an exciting day for Gable Porter. Porter, a sophomore from Underwood, slipped away with a narrow victory in the quarterfinals. Then he survived the semifinals with a double overtime victory over Logan-Magnolia's Hagen Heistand. Porter, who is now 13-0 on the season, is chasing his second state title. He'll have a tough opponent in Cascade's Aidan Noon, a champion last season at 126 pounds.

4:08 p.m.: Noonan returns to the finals

Cascade's Aidan Noonan is back in the finals after beating West Sioux's Mikey Baker with a 4-0 decision at 132 pounds. Noonan was last year's champion at 126 pounds. He's now 45-0 after his latest victory.

4:02 p.m.: A major clash at the 120 finals set up

Lisbon's Brandon Paez beat Riverside's Jace Rose with a 6-4 decision to move into Saturday's finals. It sets up what should be a fun matchup with New London's Marcel Lopez. Lopez, a two-time state champion, is undefeated with a 59-0 mark. Paez, a champion last season, has suffered just one loss this season.

3:57 p.m.: Lopez chases No. 3

The Class 1A quarterfinals are underway and the biggest match so far came from Marcel Lopez. Lopez, a junior from New London, is chasing his third state title. He's on the verge of it, getting back to Saturday's championship after picking up a 3-0 decision over Don Bosco's Garrett Funk. It was just the second loss of the season for Funk. Meanwhile, Lopez remains undefeated with a perfect 59-0 record.

3:45 p.m. Quarterfinals of Class 2A are complete

We've wrapped up the quarterfinals of Class 2A and moved on to the Class 1A semifinals. Class 2A will resume later tonight with the semifinals and third round consolations. Here's a look at the team race. West Delaware, which marched out to the lead in the first day, suddenly finds itself in a big battle with Osage.

  • 1.) West Delaware: 59
  • 2.) Osage: 45
  • 3.) Crestwood: 31
  • 4.) Independence: 30
  • 5.) (tie) Notre Dame/W.B./Danville: 26.5
  • 7.) (tie) Camanche, Winterset: 25
  • 9.) East Marshall: 22.5
  • 10.) (tie) Davenport Assumption, Clarion-Goldfield-Dows, NH/TV: 22

3:30 p.m.; A showdown of unbeatens

The 195-pound quarterfinals gave us a showdown of unbeatens between West  Delaware's Wyatt Voelker and Ballard's Mason Askelsen. Voelker got the dominating victory, handing Askelsen his first loss with a 21-9 major decision. Voelker improved to 36-0 on the season.

3:21 p.m.: Ahrendsen advances

Union's Adam Ahrendsen, last season's champ at 160 pounds, is making a run at the 182 pound crown this season. Ahrendsen improved to 21-0 on the season with a 10-2 major decision over Benton Community's Austin Roos. Get excited, UNI fans. He's signed to wrestle for the Panthers.

3:17 p.m.: Osage is making a run

West Delaware was in a good position to possibly pull away and maybe lock up the team race tonight. But Osage is giving West Delaware a run. Osage started off going 4-0 in the quarterfinals to stay well within striking distance of West Delaware. West Delaware struggled, going 2-3 in the morning..

3:12 p.m.: More history in the works

Solon's Hayden Taylor is in the conversation of making some major history. Taylor advanced to tonight's semifinals with a 9-2 decision over Grinnell's Landon Kirby.  Taylor, a two time defending state champion, hasn't lost since his freshman season, rolling to a 37-0 record this season. He's just a junior, so a third state championship would put him in contention for a fourth.

3:09 p.m.: Finally?

Sergeant Bluff-Luton's Jack Gaukel may finally get his state title. Gaukel, a three time finalist, beat Hampton-Dumont's Carl Barkema 11-4 in the quarterfinals. He advances to tonight's semifinals but as you can read from Cody Goodwin's story yesterday, that's nothing new for some wrestlers.

3:05 p.m.: Michael Lewis takes a step closer to history

Centerville's Michael Lewis advanced to tonight's semifinals with a 6-0 decision over West Delaware's Logan Peyton. Lewis is chasing some big-time history. The three state champion is trying to become the 29th four time state champion in state history. Cael Happel of Lisbon was the last, accomplishing the feat in 2020.

2:55 p.m., Brandon O'Brien moves on

Brandon O'Brien, the subject of a fantastic feature story by Cody Goodwin, moved on with a fall over Winterset's Keegan Jensen in just 25 seconds. O'Brien was a finalist a year ago wrestling at 106 pounds for Linn-Mar. He improved to 41-2 with the win.

2:52 p.m.: Still undefeated

Crestwood's Carter Fousek remained undefeated for the season. Fousek improved to 28-0 with a pin over Davenport Assumptoin's TJ Fitzpatrick in 1:49. Fousek, a junior, is a two-time state champion and rolled through last season, compiling a 40-3 record.

2:50 p.m.: A big rematch in the making at 113

Webster City's Camron Phetxoumphone tallied a major decision over Indendence's Kale Wieland to advance. Phetxoumphone last year's champ at 106 pounds, could have a major match coming up. Crestwood's Anders Kittleson, the only person to beat Phetxoumphone this season, picked up a pin just 49 seconds.

2:44 p.m.: An early upset at 106

Webster City freshman Carson Doolittle knocked off top seed Carter Anderson of Albia with a 2-1 decision. The loss was just the second of the season for Anderson who is now 43-2 on the season. Doolittle improved to 34-4 with the big victory.

2:25 p.m.: Session 5 set to start

Session 5 of the state tournament is about to get underway. It'll include Class 2A quarterfinals Class 1A semifinals and third round consolations and then 2A second round consolations. The team race in both classes will be big. But the story to keep an eye on in the Class 2A action will be at 145 pounds. Matthew Lewis of Centerville is searching for his fourth state title. Lewis could take a step closer to joining the exclusive club which includes just 28 other members.

1:15 p.m.: Cody Goodwin's breakdown of the Class 3A race

I caught up with Cody Goodwin to break down the team race in Class 3A. It's a tight one. Here's what he had to say about how things are going:

"We're getting exactly the team race we thought we would, which is fantastic. Waukee put seven in the semis....they went 7-2. Waverly-Shell Rock and Southeast Polk both went 6-2. They all hit each other in some capacity at a lot of these weights. So, we're really going to figure some things out in terms of the team race. But then, North Scott also put four in and Iowa City West put four in. Ankeny struggled. Fort Dodge struggled a little bit. Bettendorf also put four in the semifinals. It's definitely a three-team battle at the top that we thought we'd be getting. Then, there's going to be a lot of dope semifinal matches."

Programming note: Session 5 won't get started until 2:30 p.m.

1:09 p.m.: Session 4 complete

The fourth session of the state tournament is in the books. It included Class 3A and 1A quarterfinals and then Class 3A and 1A second round consolations. We've already taken a look at the team scoring for Class 1A. So, let's take a look at where things stand in the 3A team title race.

  • 1.)  Waukee: 78
  • 2.) Waverly-Shell Rock: 75.5
  • 3.) Southeast Polk: 69.5
  • 4.) Fort Dodge: 48.5
  • 5.) Iowa City West: 48
  • 6.) Bettendorf: 46.5
  • 7.) North Scott: 46
  • 8.) Ankeny: 45.5
  • 9.) Linn-Mar: 40
  • 10.) Norwalk: 30.5

12:16 p.m.: Ella Schmit's run is done

Bettendorf junior Ella Schmit suffered a tech fall loss to Kael Kurtz of Iowa City High. Another victory would have landed Schmit on the podium. Instead, she ends her season with a 16-5 record. Schmit would have been the second girl in the tournament's history to place. Megan Black qualified again in 2012 and finished eighth at 106 pounds in Class 1A for Eddyville-Blakesburg-Fremont.

12:10 p.m.: Class 1A second round consolations are complete

We've finished the Class 1A second round consolations. They'll resume action at 2:30 p.m., with the semifinals and third round consolations. Here's a look at the team standings.

  • 6.) Nashua-Plainfield: 28.5
  • 7.) (tie) Columbus Catholic, New London: 27
  • 9.) Underwood: 26.5
  • 10.) West Hancock: 24

11:44 a.m.: Cody Goodwin's analysis of Class 1A

I caught up with Cody to chat about the team race in Class 1A .The consolations are still going on but Don Bosco is really starting to pull away in the team race. It could still be a big night for the Dons. Here's what Cody had to say:

"Don Bosco put eight in the semifinals. Lisbon put six but there is quite a gap between them....this race belongs to Don Bosco. There's a very real possibility that they could clinch tonight if they ball it out in the semifinals, which would be insane."

11:25 a.m.: Let's talk about Waukee

The Warriors turned in another strong start to the day, going 7-2 in the quarterfinals. Carter Freeman, Koufax Christensen, Thurman Christensen, Cole Ferguson, Griffin Gammell, Tanner Spyksma and Ben Reiland all picked up victories to move on to tonight's semifinals. The Warriors have already racked up 74 points and have the lead in the team race over second-place Waverly-Shell Rock which has 65.5 points.

11:04 a.m.: Class 3A quarterfinals are complete. And the team race is still close

Here's where things stand in the team race with the Class 3A quarterfinals now done. The Class 1A consolations are about to begin.

  1. Waukee: 74
  2. Waverly-Shell Rock: 65.5
  3. Southeast Polk: 63.5

10:59 a.m.: Kueter moves on

Iowa City High's Ben Kueter, a state champion last season at 160 pounds, moved on with a fall over Davenport North's Cade Sheedy. What makes Kueter's victory so special is that the sophomore is now 9-0 on the season and in the hunt for a second-straight title. He also went 24-0 as a freshman last season.

10:56 a.m.: Lincoln star moves on

Des Moines Lincoln junior Mickey Griffith was one of the big stories of last year's state tournament. Griffith won Lincoln's first state title in 14 years. He's well on his way to another title. Griffin tallied a major decision over Southeast Polk's Andrew Reed to improve to 24-1 on the season.

More need-to-know information:

10:47 a.m. The 152 pound field is loaded

The homestretch of the 152 pound field should be full of fun. Waverly-Shell Rock's Aiden Riggins remained undefeated (32-0 with a pin over Johnston's Sam Zindel. Iowa City West's Graham Gambrall, last year's champ at 145 pounds, beat LInn-Mar's Abass Kemokai, 6-2. Don't forget about Ankeny's Caleb Rathjen. The two-time state champion pinned Waukee's Colin Driscoll in just 29 seconds to move on.

10:38 a.m.: Garvin goes for No. 2

Iowa City West junior Hunter Garvin is in prime position for his second-straight state title. Garvin improved to 14-0 on the season with a fall over Ankeny's Jace Anderson in 4:32. Garvin won last season's state title at 132 pounds.

Day 1 coverage:

10:34 a.m.: Tons taking place at 132

The 132 pound field in Class 3A is full of talent. And the matches are getting more and more exciting as we get further into the tournament. Waverly-Shell Rock's Ryder Block improved to 23-0 on the season with a major decision over Iowa City West's Kael Scranton. Two-time state champion Drake Ayala of Fort Dodge, pinned Norwalk's Grant Harbour in 2:45. The biggest surprise came with LInn-Mar's Bryce Parke who pinned Mason City's Jace Rhodes, a medalist the last two years.

10:27 a.m.: Two champs move on at 120

Tanner Anderson of Ankeny and Bailey Roybal of Waverly-Shell Rock both picked up victories. Anderson, a champion in 2019, won by tech fall over Lewis Central's Tanner Wink. Roybal, last season's champ at 113 pounds, beat Bettendorf's Jayce Luna with a 9-4 decision.

10:17 a.m.. Class 3A action starts

We're on to Class 3A action and Carter Freeman of Waukee gets it going with a tech fall victory over Ankeny's Benjamin Hansen. It sets up what could be an epic semifinal between Freeman and Fort Dodge's Dru Ayala. Ayala, also a freshman, beat Waverly-Shell Rock's Zane Behrends.

10 a.m.: Update on the team race

Don Bosco entered the day with the lead. The Dons added to it with a strong second day. Don Bosco went 8-3 in the quarterfinals and still sit in first place. With the quarter finals complete, here's a look at the top team scoring.

  1. Don Bosco: 82.5

North Butler's Chet Buss, last year's champion at 285 pounds, continued his undefeated season. Buss improved to 35-0 with a fall over Underwood's Easton Eledge in 1:41.

9:53 a.m.: An upset at 195

Dyersville Bechkman's Owen Huehnergarth knocked off top seed Truman Krob at 195 pounds. Krob, who entered the day with a 30-5 mark, was pinned in 5:21. Huehnergarth, the third seed, improved to 30-7 on the season.

9:42 a.m.: 40-0 freshman

Columbus Catholic's Maximus Magayna improved to 40-0 with a pin over New London's Josh Glendening in 1:42. Remember Magayna. He's just a freshman and well on his way to an undefeated first season.

9:39 a.m.: Briar Reisz moves on...again

Logan-Magnolia's Briar Reisz might have the most interesting story when it comes to the Class 1A field. Reisz, a senior, is a three-time finalist but has yet to win a state championship. That could change this season. Reisz, who picked up a second period fall in his first match of the tournament, added a 9-4 decision on Friday against Lisbon's Lincoln Holub. Subscribers can read all about Reisz's run in Cody Goodwin's story from Thursday.

9:33 a.m.: Avila's march to history continues

Lisbon's Robert Avila took another step closer to making state tournament history. Avila, a junior who is already a two-time state champion, secured a 43 second pin over Lake Mills' Alex Beaty at 145 pounds. Avila is marching toward a third-straight state title. If he accomplishes that, a fourth will be in his sights.

9:29 a.m.: Noonan stays undefeated

Cascade's Aiden Noonan improved to 44-0 on the season with a fall over Sioux Central's Chris Ferguson in 2:49. Noonan, a senior, was last year's champion at 126 pounds before making the jump up a weight class. He's in a loaded field that includes Underwood's Gable Porter who has yet to lose in his high school career. Then there's Logan-Magnolia's Hagen Heistand who improved to 41-0 with a major decision over Nashua-Plainfield's Trey Nelson.

9:26 a.m.: Some excitement at 132

Mediapolis' Quinten Aney nearly had the upset of the tournament. Aney fell to Underwood's Gable Porter at 132 pounds. Porter, a sophomore, rolled to a state title last season with a 35-0 record. He improved to 12-0 this season with the victory over Aney. But he had to work for it. The lone point in his 1-0 decision came with a third period escape.

9:17 a.m.: 120 pound champs advance

The 120 pound weight class includes a pair of returning champs. Lisbon's Brandon Paez was last season's champ at 120. New London's Marcel Lopez is a two-time champion who won last season at 113 pounds. Both advanced with wins Friday. Peaz secured a first period fall over North Butler's Tanner Arjes. Lopez's match had a little more drama with it. The junior beat West Hancock's Kellen Smith 7-5.

9:10 a.m.: We're off and running with a pair of pins

The second session is rolling. And it started with a pair of pins by two undefeated wrestlers. Missouri Valley's Eli Becerra improved to 46-0 with a pin over Wapsie Valley's Eason Krall in the 106 quarterfinals. Brandon Graff of West Sioux secured the first victory of the day with a fall over Riverside's John Schroder in 1:40 at 113 pounds.
