Cy-Hawk football: 20 years of Iowa-Iowa State postgame celebrations

Des Moines Register

Iowa and Iowa State have had plenty to celebrate over the last two decades of Cy-Hawk football games.

The Hawkeyes lead the rivalry over the last two decades with 13 wins, including the last six. In 2001, the Cyclones won its fourth of five straight rivalry games.

Three years before that, in 1998, Iowa State snapped a 15-game win streak by the Hawkeyes.

That 1998 game was Dan McCarney's first Cy-Hawk win as coach of the Cyclones, and Hayden Fry's last defeat in the series as Hawkeyes coach.

Iowa has won 13 of the last 20 Cy-Hawk football games against Iowa State, between 2001-2021. The rivals didn't play in 2020.

McCarney went 6-6 against Iowa. Gene Chizik went 1-1 against the Hawkeyes. Paul Rhoads was 3-4 between 2009-2015. And Matt Campbell has lost his first four Cy-Hawk matchups.

Fry's first victory as Iowa head coach came in 1979 against Iowa State. He went 16-4 against the Cyclones, including a 15-game winning streak from 1983-1997.

Kirk Ferentz, now in his 23rd season as head coach at Iowa, has gone 13-9 against the Cyclones. He's 13-5 since losing his first four in the series.
