Iowa State guard Caleb Grill becomes second Cyclone this week to announce intent to transfer

A second Cyclone is saying goodbye to Ames this week.

Caleb Grill, a freshman from Maize, Kansas, will be transferring from Iowa State, he announced Wednesday via social media.

"After thoughtful consideration and discussing what would be best for me with my family," Grill wrote, "I have decided to transfer from Iowa State."

Grill committed to the Cyclones last spring after previously signing with South Dakota State. His recruitment re-opened after Jackrabbits coach and former ISU assistant T.J. Otzelberger left for UNLV. The 6-foot-3 guard became something of a hot commodity late in the recruiting cycle before picking the Cyclones over the likes of Kansas State and the Runnin' Rebels.

Grill, though, wasn't able to make much of a dent for ISU. He averaged just 13.8 minutes per game. He shot 31.4% from the field and 25% from 3-point range. He did start ISU's final two games after guard Rasir Bolton was sidelined by the concussion protocol.

His departure opens a second scholarship for the Cyclones after little-used sophomore Zion Griffin, once a four-star recruit, announced his intention to transfer Monday. Iowa State could have more scholarships available if sophomore point guard Tyrese Haliburton opts to enter the NBA draft as expected (where he's projected to be a lottery pick), or if there is additional attrition from the current roster.

The Cyclones went 12-20 last season, the first 20-loss campaign in 44 years for the program. They'll now likely have a minimum of six new players, having already signed a four-man recruiting class. Javan Johnson, a transfer from Troy, also will be eligible after sitting out last season.
