Three things in life are certain: Death, taxes and Iowa wrestlers competing in the Olympics.

Seriously.

Since 1920, at least one wrestler either born in Iowa or competing collegiately in Iowa has represented Team USA wrestling in the Olympics. That's 24 straight Olympics, for those counting at home. Former Hawkeye wrestler Thomas Gilman is the latest, wrestling at 57 kilograms in the Tokyo Summer Olympics.

Out of those Olympic wrestlers from Iowa, 13 have won gold medals. Seven of those came in the last nine Olympics (Jake Varner in 2012, Cael Sanderson in 2004, Tom Brands in 1996, Kevin Jackson in 1992, and Lewis Banach, Ed Banach and Lou Banach in 1984).

2016: Iowa's Daniel Dennis competes at the Rio Olympics.

2012: Iowa State's Jake Varner wins gold at the London Olympics.

2008: Osage graduate, current Northern Iowa coach Doug Schwab competes in the Beijing Olympics.

2004: Iowa State's Cael Sanderson wins gold at the Athens Olympics.

2000: Former Iowa wrestlers Terry Brands and Lincoln McIlravy both win bronze at the Sydney Olympics.

1996: Former Iowa wrestler and current head coach Tom Brands wins gold at the Atlanta Olympics.

1992: Former Cyclone wrestler/coach and current U.S. team coach Kevin Jackson wins gold at the Barcelona Olympics.

1988: Iowa State's Nate Carr wins bronze at the Seoul Olympics.

1984: Iowa wrestlers Lewis, Ed and Lou Banach all win gold medals at the Los Angeles Olympics. Hawkeye Barry Davis won silver and Dan Gable was the head coach.

1980: Iowa's Chris Campbell, Chuck Tagla and Randy Lewis qualify for the Moscow Olympics but don't compete, as the U.S. boycotts the Games.

1976: Iowa State's Ben Peterson wins silver at the Montreal Olympics.

1972: Iowa State's Dan Gable and Peterson both win gold at the Munich Olympics.

1968: Iowa's Steve Combs, Iowa State wrestler Tom Peckham and former Iowa State coach Bobby Douglas all compete in the Mexico City Olympics.

1964: Douglas competes in his first Olympic Games in Tokyo.

1960: Iowa's Terry McCann wins gold in the Rome Olympics.

1956: Marion High School graduate Dale Thomas competes in the Melbourne Olympics.

1952: Council Bluffs Thomas Jefferson High School graduate Bill Smith wins gold at the Helsinki Olympics. 

1948: Clarion's Glen Brand wins gold at the London Olympics. Osage's Gerald Leeman also competed.

1936: Cornell College's Dale Brand represents the U.S. at the Berlin Olympics.

1932: Iowa State's Hugo Otopalik coaches the U.S. Olympic team in the Los Angeles Games. 

1928: Marshalltown's Allie Morrison becomes Iowa's first gold medalist, winning at the Amsterdam Olympics. Edgewood's Lloyd Appleton took silver.

1924: Cornell College's Ken Truckenmiller competes in the Paris Olympics.

1920: Davenport native Nat Pendleton wins silver in the Antwerp Olympics.
