On Sunday, a candlelight vigil was held for the Jones family after an impaired driver hit the four family members as they crossed the street in Louville.

Four family members — Trey Jones; his wife, Amy Jones; their daughter Ava, 17; and son Creek — were on the sidewalk waiting to cross the street when, according to a police report, the driver hit them.

At midnight Sunday, Trey Jones' vital organs were to be harvested after a ceremony at the University of Louisville Hospital, Nickerson High School principal Rick Blosser told the crowd at the vigil.

Ava Jones committed to play basketball at the University of Iowa, after being tabbed named The Hutchinson News' 2022 all-Reno County girls basketball player of the year, a first-team all-state and first-team all-Central Kansas League selection.

Jones is ranked as the 83rd best girls basketball player in the nation in the Class of 2023, according to ESPNW's top 100.

How to donate to help Ava Jones and her family

Donations to help the family can be given directly to a bank, a GoFundMe page or a pizza fundraiser.

Cash or checks can be dropped off at People’s Bank and Trust in Nickerson and Hutchinson. The "Jones Family Fund" GoFundMe page had raised slightly more than $101,000 as of Tuesday morning. Along with funeral costs, the family will need to pay medical expenses and hotel stays in Louisville for family members.

There is a July 21 fundraiser at Gambino’s Pizza locations in Hutchinson and Sterling. The fundraiser will be from 4 p.m. to closing, will give 10% of all sales and 100% of all tips to the family.

Spangles (30th Street location) will donate 20% of sales to benefit the Jones family from 5 to 8 p.m. July 26. Donation jars will be available. Customers must sign their receipt for the funds to be properly allocated.
